Leaders Can Say The Dumbest Things :)

“The problem with this world is that the intelligent people are full of doubts but the stupid ones are full of confidence.” Charles Bukowski.  Instead of confidence, I would like to insert arrogant.  Leaders are no different.  They can be, well, downright arrogant.  It is that arrogance that they stumble over.  It is that arrogance that blinds them.  They say power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.  When leaders do not think before they act, write or speak, they make themselves look….. like a dunce!  When leaders believe they are “bullet proof” they tend to intimidate, demand and say the most ridiculous things.

Here’s some quotes discovered by “Inc.” magazine:

“Subject:  System Failures

It has come to my attention that the e-mail system was down yesterday.  From now on, I have requested that the system manager send a group message to everyone next time the system goes down.”

“Subject: Company Picnic

We will have our first company picnic next week, which we have dubbed “Morale Builder”. The picnic will feature carnival rides and all-you-can-eat hot dogs and beans.  A menu of steak and lobster is available for executives.”

“Subject: Recognizing Employee Contributions

After several strong sales months, we have decided to print Employee T-shirts!  These shirts will go on sale next Monday.”

“Subject: Computer Course

After much consideration, we have decided to cancel the training for our new computer system on the grounds that once people learn the system, they usually leave.”

Wow!  Hard to believe but how many of us have read emails or listened to speeches of our leader(s) and had to scratch our heads with amazement?  Common sense seems to have left the room.  Some of you might find these quotes funny but to the people who have to work with these leaders, it is a nightmare.  It is very hard to be your best when leaders like these continue in leadership positions.

I write this to encourage board members and/or senior leaders to put in place 360 degree reviews and hold your leaders accountable.  If you are asked to give feedback with a 360 degree review.  Input the truth.  Only the truth shall set you free so you can have an organization that encourages, inspires and rewards.  Help your corporate soul heal.  Hold leaders to higher standards.

Until next time….  Peace!  🙂
